Free phone cards used as promotions

Free phone cards have become synomous with give aways these days. Many companies have free phone cards made up with their logo on them and give them away free. It was only a few years ago the telephone companies would send you one in order to lure you away from your current carrier and sign up with them.

I remember this very well, because I would receive them in the mail with messages such as use your free phone cards as a gift from us. Then when you read the small print it would say, upon using this card you have entered into an agreement to switch to our carrier.

There was this one time when I had a contract with one telephone carrier that when I switched back to them after three months I would have a whole month long distance without charges. So I had switched back and I was just entering the third month period when my husband saw one of the free phone cards lying on my desk, picked it up and used it. I could not believe it when the next month I received a bill from this other company, and I did not get my free month from my present carrier.

It took some untangling before I realized my husband had inadvertently destroyed my plan of having a month of long distance without paying. I’m happy to say, I have not received any of these free phone cards for a long time. Thank goodness. They are still available, but usually with a promotion of some kind.
