Beware of free calling cards – what happened to me, may happen to you!

Often you may receive offers through the mail, or via your telephone company saying you can have a free calling card if you choose this or that plan, or if you want to switch etc. What I personally have found is when I have received these offers of free calling cards, I need to be very careful about the small print.

I had an experience where I had switched back to my main phone server with the offer of one free months service after three months. As at the time I had high long distance bills, this seemed like a good idea. So I switched. Then we received a free calling card from the company we had been dealing with. I looked at it, put it aside and forgot it, as I had decided to go back to my original server.

Unbeknown to me, my husband saw the card, saw that it was a prepaid phone card and put it in his pocket. A short time later he went on a trip and used the free calling card, which he had picked up from my desk. What we did not realize was upon using it, it automatically switched our long distance calling back to the other company. I lost my free month of long distance, which at that time was a substantial amount of money. All for around $15.00 of free long distance,which we did not use up.

The moral of the story is read the small print. Not all free calling cards are the same. Not all phonecards are the same. Not all long distance plans are the same. Since that particular experience, which took several telephone calls to change back to the server I have read the small print and I’m very aware that nothing is really free. Somewhere you pay for it, so figure out, is the payment for the free part really the best deal?
