March 18, 2005 By: Alan Zunec Cell phones for childrenPeople may argue when discussing whether or not cell phones for children are appropriate. A cell phone for children has not been proved to be a safe thing. While a mobile phone is not yet considered safe it may be the only way that a parent can get in touch with their child. No matter what age, whenever in an emergency situation a wireless phone is a necessity. If you are a parent you are never able to determine if a crisis may arise where your kid may be in need of a phone. To put your child on a shared family cell phone plan can be a wise move when the child uses the phone in moderation or for emergencies only. The reason why this last statement is important is because exposure to radiation should be as limited as possible. If you are a concerned parent wanting to get a cell phone for your kid then you can research wireless phones on-line. It is possible for you to find how a mobile phone’s radiation level compares to another. There are also comparison charts by manufacturer. You may also come across the top ten best phones with the lowest radiation levels. When getting a wireless phone for your child it is best to keep their health in mind first. It is unfortunate that cell phones for kids have become an image conscious subject. Amongst other children it can also be seen as a sign of maturity or a status symbol. On the flip side when a kid shares minutes with their parents as a way to monitor them it can be considered convenient. It is however, considered inconvenient for school or for learning. When a child has a wireless phone on their person at school it is best to have it on vibrate as to not disturb anyone during class. Most schools these days actually have rules and guidelines regarding the use of a cell phone. The most common places that schools will allow the student to use a cell phone are parking lots, bus drop-offs, during lunch and parent pick-up locations. In one survey it was estimated that 75% of middle school students had cell phones. While 95% of them were unaware of the potential radiation hazard to their health. Something to keep in mind when looking for a phone is that the smaller the wireless phone the more power must be transmitted. And therefore the more power that must be transmitted then the more radiation exposure you are likely to get. Therefore the less your child needs to use the phone the better and can be convenient if only used when picking you kid up from school or after extra curricular activities.
