The history of cell phones dates back to 1947, but it wasn’t until 1973 that the first cellular phone call was sent and received. The inventor Dr. Martin Cooper, former general manager for the systems division at Motorola, set up a base station in New York with the first working prototype of a cellular phone, the Motorola Dyna-Tac. This prototype weighed a whopping 30 ounces, where today most wireless phones weigh as little as 3 ounces. The history of cell phones was extremely slow at first, moving through the various phases required to provide phones and wireless service to the public.

The history of cell phones was a 10-year process to bring them to market. After 1973’s first successful test, it wasn’t until 1977 that cell phones went public. Trials began in Chicago with 2000 customers, and then in 1979 Japan got started. These cellular phones were extremely expensive costing the consumer $3500 where as today you can get them for free with your cellular phone contract. Wirless phones and wireless service have come along way since 1973.

With more than 60 million customers with digital phones today, it is not surprising what a huge market this has become. The recent history of cell phones is much more interesting, with technology innovations in the popular areas of ringtones, wireless web, games and so much more.
